The Essential Collection, Explained

Pure form and refined simplicity. Why the essentials are the hardest pieces to design, and what we removed to arrive at them.

An essential piece has nowhere to hide. There is no print to carry it, no unusual cut to hold the eye, nothing to distract from a proportion that is slightly wrong. It is the most exposed thing a house can make.

What we took out

The first samples had more of everything: a marginally longer body, a visible topstitch at the hem, a branded tab at the side seam. All of it was defensible on its own. Together it read as noise.

We removed the tab, then the topstitch, then two centimetres from the body. What remained was harder to photograph and considerably better to wear, which has been true often enough that we now treat it as a rule.

Designed beyond the season

These pieces are not revised each season, and that is the point. The essentials are the part of the line we expect a wearer to replace only when it finally wears through, and to replace with the same thing.

Clean silhouettes, considered proportions, and a short list of colors that do not chase anything. If the collection looks unremarkable in isolation, we have probably got it right.
